Berkeley Island Park To Be Renamed For John C. Bartlett

John C. Bartlett, an Ocean County Freeholder for 39 years, is having the park renamed after him as tribute for his years of service.

BAYVILLE, NJ - The Berkeley Island Park will be undergoing a name change to honor one of Ocean County's longest public servants, according to the Ocean County Government. John C. Bartlett, an Ocean County Freeholder of 39 years, will be the recipient of the name change.

Bartlett, who is retiring due to health issues, worked on the park as one of his first projects as a freeholder. After Superstorm Sandy, in 2012, the park was lost to the storm and Bartlett oversaw the redevelopment to get it back open in 2018.

"This park, amongst all of our county parks, is one of the most near and dear to John," said Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little.

As part of the new park rebuilt after the storm, Berkeley Island Park features new additions, like a splash and water park. When the park was reopened in May, Bartlett was there to cut the red ribbon.

The renaming has been scheduled for the October 17 meeting as Bartlett's term of service is nearing its end.

"There is no more fitting way to honor our colleague and our friend," Little said.
