Berkeley Officials Set To Launch Gun Safety Program For Kids

The township will offer free gun safety locks and educational materials, mayor and police chief say

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - Almost every day somewhere in the United States a child dies as a result of access to guns.

Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. and Police Chief Karin DiMichele don't want that to happen here. They recently announced that Berkeley will participate in "Project Child Safe."

"Project Child Safe" is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation to promote firearms safety and education.

The safety kits include gun locks and literature on how to handle firearms in a safe manner.

“If you own a firearm, please practice responsible gun ownership by using a gun lock and storing your firearms away from children," DiMichele said.

The free kits can be picked up at the records window in the Berkeley Township Police Department located at Pinewald-Keswick Road in Bayville. The records window is open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"We encourage our residents to continue to keep our township safe and take advantage of this free program," Amato said.
