Berkeley Township Remembers September 11, 2001

Berkeley Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will hold a 9-11 Memorial Service at 6 p.m. on Monday at Veterans Park.

The audience and township officials at Saturday's Berkeley Community Pride Day took time out from the festivities to remember the victims and first responders of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"I always thank our first responders and pay tribute to those first responders who paid the ultimate sacrifice," Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said. "Their first instinct was to rush into the towers to save lives, never thinking of their own. We pay tribute to them and the innocent victims of this horrific attack on our country. We shall never forget.'

Amato also took time to remember Holiday Heights residents Tom and JoAnn Meehan for helping Berkeley obtain a piece of steel from one of the Twin Towers for Berkeley's 9-11 memorial. The Meehans lost their daughter Colleen Anne Meehan Barkow in the terrorist attacks.
