BERKELEY, NJ — A Central Regional High School soccer player received Kearny Bank’s 2021 “Strength Award” for overcoming a serious injury last year.
The boys varsity soccer team's starting goalkeeper, Jason Trapp, shattered his collarbone and sustained a serious concussion during a game in October, according to a news release.
After he was released from the hospital, Trapp could not play on the soccer field for about a month. In the weeks that followed, Trapp still attended each game and practice, serving as the team’s unofficial goalkeeper coach.

Trapp's official return to the field came about a month after his injury when he received full medical clearance.
His first challenge was Southern Regional High School, which was the top offensive team in the conference, and he made 22 saves to force overtime.

“Jason made a commitment to our team that he was determined to fulfill,” Troy Van Hise, Central Regional’s boys varsity soccer coach, told Kearny Bank. “It was one of the most impressive journeys by any student-athlete I’ve ever witnessed. He simply never gave up.”
Trapp will continue his education and athletic career at Rochester Institute of Technology this fall.
First awarded in 2019, the Kearny Bank "Strength Award" celebrates scholastic athletes who overcome significant physical injuries and is open to any student athlete attending any of New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s 436 member schools.
