Drone Flights Banned In Bayville: FAA

BERKELEY, NJ — Drone flights are now temporarily banned in Bayville, as the area has been added to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) list of temporary flight restrictions.

Bayville was added to the list Dec. 23 and the ban goes until Jan. 18, according to the FAA. Several other New Jersey towns were added recently too, with nearby locations including West Creek and Brick.

The restrictions were put into place for "special security reasons," though the FAA did not elaborate on what these were.

Reports on drone sightings across the Garden State have gone down since the initial craze. As of Dec. 17, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it had received more than 5,000 tips since beginning their official inquiry on Nov. 26 — and that 100 of those tips generated a lead. According to the FBI, "the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones."

Under the temporary flight restrictions, no drones — also called unmanned aircraft systems — are authorized except under special circumstances, including ones being flown by law enforcement or in support of "an act of national defense, homeland security, firefighting, or a disaster response mission," and commercial drones with a valid statement of work. Drone pilots must have a special governmental interest airspace waiver and comply with all other federal aviation regulations, the FAA notice said.
