A Happy Ending: Homeless Elderly Poodle Rescued By Area Vet

The little 15-year-old poodle mix lost her longtime home when her owner had to move into a nursing facility

BAYVILLE, NJ - Need to read some good news? DeeDee the abandoned poodle is no longer alone.

The little 15-year-old dog, who had just nine days to leave the house she lived in for many years when her owner had to go into a nursing home, is safe for now and hopefully for the rest of her life.

The picture posted on Patch on Monday was a heartbreaker. The little dog with a pink bow on her head looked confused and lonely. She had been left in her Bayville home alone, except for daily visits from Linda Lee, a kindly neighbor who kept her company four or five times a day.

"I spend a lot of time with her because she is all alone," Lee told Patch.

Enter Dr. Laura Cormal, co-owner of Jersey Shore Veterinary Emergency Service on Route 70 in Lakewood. She met DeeDee on Tuesday and took her for a checkup. Then she brought the little dog home with her permanently, said Matt Geissinger, one of the founder's of Lost Dogs of Ocean County.

"DeeDee will not have to want for anything the rest of her life," he said. "This little dog has hit the doggie lottery for sure."

Dr. Cormal examined DeeDee today and found some problems that hopefully can be corrected. The little doghas a 104 degree fever and a bad chronic skin infection that will take a long time to clear up.

"DeeDee is sound asleep after meeting dogs, cats and chickens today," Cormal said. "Her ears are swollen shut and her foot pads raw, but today is a new beginning!"

The owner's family wants the home sold to pay for her medical bills. The real estate agent who is selling the home had said that DeeDee had to be out within the next nine days, Lee has said.

"The owner's family does not want her," Lee said. "I have two dogs myself and can't take on another. I asked the son if he can take her and he told me to just open the door."

Patch will update soon to see how DeeDee and her new owner are doing.
