Jail Inmate Stuffed Jumpsuit In Ocean County Justice Complex Toilet, Flooding Parts Of Building

Pipes and main sewer line burst when jumpsuit was flushed, offices and courtrooms damaged by raw sewage.

TOMS RIVER - Ocean County Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy had to run his department out of his police vehicle Tuesday when his office was badly damaged after an inmate flushed a jumpsuit down a toilet, according to a report on app.com

The Ocean County Justice Complex was "significantly damaged" after the Sunday night incident, which sent raw sewage spewing through the ceilings and walls of Mastronardy's third-floor office and down into courtrooms and offices on the first and second floors, Ocean County Administrator Carl W. Block said.

"As they say, it flows down hill," Block said.

Ocean County is insured for the damage, but there will still be some cost to taxpayers. The damage estimates are still being calculated, he said.

By Tuesday, the second and third floors of the complex had reopened. Three courtrooms on the first floor had also reopened, and five courtrooms were still off limits, Block said.
