Men Try To Steal Car In Holiday City With Owner Still In It

While searching for suspects, police find another stolen car in the woods, police chief says

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - A Holiday City man got a surprise while he was sitting in his car recently when several men tried to burglarize it, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichael said.

Police responded to the Van Gogh Street area on Dec. 19 to investigate a report of an attempted car burglary.

"The victim stated that while he was in his car, unknown persons attempted to enter his vehicle," she said. "It is uncertain if they knew the vehicle was occupied."

The victim further told police that some unknown men then fled through backyards and into the woods south of Port Royal Drive. While police were searching the area, Patrolman Justin Heffernan found an unoccupied suspicious vehicle in the area. Further investigation determined that the vehicle had been stolen the week before in the Holiday City area and was probably used in the Dec. 19 incident, DiMichele said.

Despite the search effort, the suspect were not found. Anyone with any information is urged to call the Berkley Township Detective Bureau at 732-341-132, ext. 611. Tips can be anonymous.
