The trail is being constructed on a section of the old Barnegat Branch rail like, once owned by the defunct Central Railroad of New Jersey. The company once provided passenger and freight service from Lakehurst to Barnegat from the 1880s to the 1970s.

Current plans call for the trail to run 15.6 miles from Barnegat to South Toms River. But the rail line actually continues for seven more miles.

So far, the trail has been completed from Burr Street in Barnegat Township to Lacey Road in Lacey, and an additional 2.8 miles from Dudley Park at the Cedar Creek in Lacey to Hickory Lane in Berkeley.

Bartlett said he has not received any complaints from property owners along the trails paths.
