Berkeley's Democratic slate for Town Council aims to challenge the historically Republican stronghold.

BERKELEY, NJ — An uncontested primary in Berkeley Township leads to a General Election showdown for four open seats on the township council in November.

Seats in each of the township's four wards are up for election this fall. The Republican slate is all incumbents: James Byrnes (Ward 1), Angelo Guadagno (Ward 2), Michael Signorile (Ward 3) and Sophia Gingrich (Ward 4).

Seeking to challenge the historically Republican stronghold is the Democratic slate: Brian R. Harkavy (Ward 1), Kia Phua (Ward 2), Mary K. Curtis (Ward 3) and Carol M. Cousins (Ward 4).

In a news release, the Berkeley Township Democratic Club said that this slate aims "to bring balance and accountability to Berkeley Township's leadership."

Voters will be able to meet Phua at the next Berkeley Township Council meeting at 6 p.m. on June 16 in the municipal building.

Here are the unofficial numbers from Tuesday's primary election. Note that the numbers remain unofficial until certified by the Ocean County Clerk's Office.

Republican

  • James Byrnes (Ward 1): 368
  • Angelo Guadagno (Ward 2): 281
  • Michael Signorile (Ward 3): 432
  • Sophia Gingrich (Ward 4): 482

Democrat

  • Brian Harkavy (Ward 1): 229
  • Kia Phua (Ward 2): 239
  • Mary K. Curtis (Ward 3): 506
  • Carol M. Cousins (Ward 4): 550
