Governor's Mansion At Island Beach Should Be Sold, Lt. Governor Says

Gubernatorial candidate Kim Guadagno wants to sell the home outright; Assemblyman John Wisniewski wants to rent it to the public.

There's no reason for any New Jersey governor to have use of the beach house at Island Beach State Park, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and state Assemblyman John Wisniewski said, according to a report on nj.com.

"I've never thought there should be a beach house for the governor," said Guadagno, the Republican nominee in the race to succeed Christie, in a text message to NJ Advance Media in Friday. "I think it should be sold."

Guadagno wants the property in Berkeley Township sold outright, Wisniewski has introduced legislation calling for it to be rented out.

"There is no real burning need to have a private beach house," Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) said. "Especially in a state as small as ours."

He introduced two pieces of legislation on Friday. One proposes to lease the home out to the general public.

The second bill calls for prohibiting the governor, his family or anyone else from using any state-owned residential property provided for the governor's use during a budget shutdown, except for Drumthwacket.

Wisniewski called the Island Beach house "a private luxury paid for with public money."

Christie infuriated many when he spent three days at the estate during a budget impasse, after he shut down state government and all state parks. He defended his use of the home, even while local businesses lost money due to the shutdown.

"Run for governor, and you can have a residence there," Christie said.
