Boundless Field Opens Saturday Morning

Challenge Grove Park will be home to the new handicap-accessible baseball field.

Kids with disabilities will get their own field of dreams when Camden County officials open Boundless Field, a specially designed field for kids with physical and developmental disabilities, at Challenge Grove Park Saturday morning.

The colorful, rubberized surface, just yards from Jake’s Place Playground, which was also designed with kids with physical limitations in mind, will allow special needs children to play baseball, softball and other sports on a field that can accommodate everyone.

“Children in wheelchairs, kids who use walkers or kids who never would be able to round the bases on a regular baseball diamond will be afforded the opportunity to participate in an organized sporting event like their peers,” said Ed McDonnell, deputy director of the county freeholder board.

The field was designed in part to host handicap-accessible baseball games—it’s permanently lined for baseball, with 50-foot base paths and a 125-foot run to deep center field—and Special Olympics events, but could potentially host everything from football games to soccer to basketball.

“This field offers new opportunities for these children, and the freeholder board is proud to construct this project that will bring smiles to so many faces,” McDonnell said. “As elected officials, our goal is to improve the quality of life in Camden County, and this extraordinary place will do just that for a special group of athletes.”
