Camden Catholic Advances, West Falls in Diamond Classic

The Irish will head to the semis Sunday.

Camden Catholic’s Colan Miller had as good a pitching performance you could hope for in the quarterfinals of the Diamond Classic against Pitman Saturday.

The senior, who also pitched the Irish to victory in the opening round last week, struck out five and gave up just three hits, as the Irish edged Pitman, 2-1, in a lightning-fast game.

Miller helped his own cause late in the game, beating out the throw for an infield single to set up Albert Faiola’s game-winning single, which drove in Ryan Ziegler, who ran for Miller.

West’s Brandon Perna had a good day on the mound, but Vineland’s Don Money lived up to his last name, shutting out the Lions in a five-hitter and driving in the only run of the game in the sixth inning as the Fighting Clan bounced West from the Diamond Classic Saturday, 1-0.

The Lions had a chance in the second with the bases loaded, but Money picked off Josh Machtinger to escape the jam.

A few innings later, Money slapped a grounder to the left side that scored Ja’Ques Colon for the game-winner.
