Camden Catholic Girls Lacrosse Edges Collingswood in OT

The Irish advance in the playoffs with the win.

It took two overtimes, but the Camden Catholic girls lacrosse team is moving on to the second round of the South Jersey, Group 1 playoffs.

The Irish had to stage two late comebacks to tie the game in regulation and the first overtime, before Shannon McCormick’s game-winner found the back of the net with just three seconds left in the second overtime.

Collingswood struck first in the first overtime period, but might’ve scored too soon—Ellie O’Neill’s goal to give the Panthers an 8-7 lead came just over halfway into the period, giving the Irish a chance to even it up.

They did just that, getting a goal from Maureen Cornely less than a minute later to tie it up and send it to the second overtime.

That’s where Camden Catholic put the clamps down, controlling the ball from the outset and grinding down the clock to set up a chance to score late and not give Collingswood the chance to respond.

After dozens of passes and cuts in front and behind the net, McCormick streaked in like a comet off the left side, beat a pair of defenders and fired it past keeper Shauna LaMania for the winner.

It was the fourth goal for McCormick, who led all scorers in the game. Camden Catholic’s Alyssa Olenick added two in the second half.

The Irish move on to face Pingry, seeded third in the group, in the second round Monday.
