Pair Of Pit Bulls, Maul, Kill Dog In Union County: Police

The Shih Tzu was attacked and killed by two pit bulls while on a walk with its owner in Union County Wednesday night, according to police.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — When two pit bulls were accidentally let loose in Linden Wednesday night, they attacked a Shih Tzu, resulting in its death, according to Linden Police.

The attack happened at around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Roselle Street. A resident left their door open, allowing the pit bulls to escape the house, according to police.

Police were nearby when they heard a scream and saw the two dogs attacking the Shih Tzu. They put on their siren and the pit bulls backed off, but it was too late.

The Shih Tzu sustained significant injuries to its leg as a result of the attack. It was then taken to an emergency veterinary hospital by the owner and unfortunately, was later euthanized due to the extent of the injuries, police said.

The owners of the pit bulls came forward and are cooperating with police and the other dog's owner. The pit bulls are now at the Newark Humane Society, according to police.

Police said there have not been any reported issues with these dogs in the past.
