Union County Hosting Lecture on 150th Anniversary of Civil War

The public is invited to attend the special lecture titled "The Ongoing Relevance of the Civil War: Ambiguity and Ambivalence".

Union County will be hosting a special lecture from Rutgers University professor Dr. Jonathan Lurie regarding the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the Civil War later this month.

The lecture, titled “The Ongoing Relevance of the Civil War: Ambiguity and Ambivalence”, will take place at the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth on Wednesday, April 15, at 2 p.m. The lecture is open to the public and includes exhibits of the Civil War and a special display focusing on President Abraham Lincoln, according to Union County.

The event is being sponsored by the Union County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.

“As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, we are honored to have Dr. Jonathan Lurie speak here about the legacy of the conflict,” Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi, chairwoman of the committee, said in a release from the county. “We welcome visitors to the Courthouse to learn more about the Civil War, the presidency of Abraham Lincoln and the experiences of Union County residents during the war.”

Lurie is a professor emeritus in the history department at Rutgers University - Newark. He was a professor of history and law at the university from 1985 to 2009. During his tenure at Rutgers, he was a Visiting Fellow in Law and History at Harvard Law School; an Historian and Archivist to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces; and a Visiting Professor of Law at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the release said.
