Metuchen To Get $250K To Help Preserve Historic Colonial Cemetery

Around 66 veterans of the Revolutionary War are believed to be buried in the Colonial Cemetery, historians say.

METUCHEN, NJ – The Borough will get $250,000 to preserve the historic Colonial Cemetery.

The funds come from NJ state budget items, said Mayor Jonathan M Busch.

Established between 1715 and 1730, the burying ground is associated with the Presbyterian Church, according to the Metuchen-Edison Historical Society.

Just over 1 acre, it contains approximately 500 marked graves and 60 unmarked graves from the early 1700s to the late 1800s.

According to Revolutionary War New Jersey, 66 veterans of the Revolutionary War are known to be buried in the Colonial Cemetery.

“This funding is critically important as we approach the Semiquincentennial of the United States, our 250th birthday on July 4, 2026,” Busch said.

District 18 legislators Sen. Patrick Diegnan and Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak and Sterley Stanley helped the borough to secure the funding.
