Gas Line Break Closed Oak Tree Road In Edison: Police

The road is partially reopen, but repairs are expected to take several more hours.

EDISON, NJ — Oak Tree Road remains partially closed following a gas main break in Edison, officials said.

The road was closed between Grove Avenue and Farmhaven Road in both directions after the line was struck around noon. The road is partially re0open, but repairs are expected to take several more hours and officials are erring on the side of caution in allowing cars on the road.

PSE&G were installing new utility poles when the gas main was struck between Meridian and Ellmyer roads, Deputy Fire Chief Andy Toth said. Homes and businesses in the area were evacuated, including the Jewish Community Center.

Children at the community center were taken to the Brighton Gardens assisted living facility next door.

“Repairs got started within an hour, but evacuations are the most prudent way to ensure public safety. It's the best, safest precaution,” Toth said.
