Fair Lawn Students Win Big At Prestigious STEM Competition

Three local middle school students finished in the top 30 at the 11th Annual Broadcom MASTERS competition.

FAIR LAWN, NJ — Two Thomas Jefferson Middle School students were STEM first-place award winners and top 30 finalists in the 11th Annual Broadcom MASTERS, a STEM middle school competition. An eighth-grade student at Memorial Middle School was also a top 30 finalist.

Fair Lawn winners, and their project focus, are:

  • STEM Technology Award 1st Place Winner & Top 30 Finalist: Ansh Sehgal (7th/ TJMS) - Bike to Bike System for Visually Impaired
  • STEM Engineering 1st Place Winner & Top 30 Finalist: Avi Patel (7th/TJMS) - The B2B System for the Visually Impaired
  • Top 30 Finalist: Raunak Singh (8th/MMS) – Apollo: A Beacon of Light (UV-C autonomous disinfecting robot)

Both first-place winners will receive $3,500 to be used toward a STEM summer camp experience, Fair Lawn school officials said. Each finalist will also receive $500, as well as $1,000 for their school to benefit its STEM program.

Each of the 30 finalists participated in four team challenges in addition to being judged on their science research project during a virtual competition held on Oct. 22-28, 2021.

Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) is a program founded and produced by the Society for Science that seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators who will solve the grand challenges of the future.
