Meals At Paterson Schools 'Completely Unacceptable': Pascrell

Rep. Bill Pascrell had a simple message after photos of the meals surfaced recently: "Mystery meat should not be served in schools."

"There can be no excuses when it comes to feeding our kids healthy meals," said Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr.

PATERSON, NJ — Photos of the food being served to schoolchildren in Paterson have prompted rage and concern from members of the community, and from New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr.

Pascrell, who calls Paterson home, and is a former educator, has even said that if the district finds the vendor at fault, the district should consider a lawsuit.

"The cafeteria meals being fed to Paterson school children are completely unacceptable," said Pascrell.

"There can be no excuses when it comes to feeding our kids healthy meals. If this vendor is at fault, they need to get their act together now or be thrown out and then sued. School meal funding comes from the federal government and as far as I’m concerned these resources are being abused."

Photos of the lunches have spread across social media this week, including what looks like an oddly portioned cheesesteak sandwich and turkey.

Take a look for yourself:

Paterson School Board Commissioners Emanuel Capers and Corey L. Teague have scheduled a press conference on Friday at 5 p.m. to discuss the lunch program at the public school district. It will take place at the library on Broadway.

Pascrell said his office is in touch with the superintendent of the district "to resolve this problem, bring accountability, and feed our kids the nutritious meals they need to learn and grow."

"I am optimistic the district has a handle on the situation but none of us better hear or see more of these deficient meals," he added.

The district is apparently taking note of the criticism, posting pictures of lunches being served at the John F. Kennedy Educational Complex on Friday.
