Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Materials Saturday

The Bergen County Utilities Authority will host a household hazardous waste collection event in Moonachie on July 21.

Area residents can properly dispose of household hazardous waste this weekend as the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) conducts a collection event Saturday.

Household hazardous waste will be accepted on July 21 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Bergen County Utilities Authority located at the foot of Empire Boulevard in Moonachie. The event will be held rain or shine. This is a free service for county residents (ID required.)

This is the fifth of eight collect events planned for this year.  During the first four events conducted, 6,486 Bergen County residents took advantage of this important environmental program to dispose of over 450,000 pounds of hazardous material in an environmentally safe manner, the BCUA reported in a statement.

  • Aerosol cans
  • Anti-freeze
  • Batteries (vehicle and rechargeable only),
  • Disinfectants
  • Fertilizer
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Gasoline
  • Herbicides
  • Insecticides
  • Paints (all types)
  • Solvents
  • Used motor oil and filters
  • Varnishes

Materials should be in original containers and labeled. Unlabeled waste or containers with unknown contents will not be accepted.

Other unacceptable materials include

  • Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V)
  • Medical waste,
  • Radioactive material
  • Explosives
  • Containers larger than five gallons
  • Compressed cylinders (oxygen and acetylene)
  • Pressure treated lumber or railroad ties.

The BCUA asks residents to not bring computers, electronics or tires to hazardous waste collections. For assistance with the disposal of computers, electronics, tires and other unacceptable waste, call 201-807-5825.

Businesses must pre-register prior to attending BCUA sponsored collection events and a disposal fee will be charged. Call 201-807-5825 for additional information.
