Ida Drops More Than 4 Inches Of Rain In Hackettstown

Residents and businesses in Hackettstown faced flooded areas and downed trees following the storm.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — Exceeding the expectations of the initial predictions, the remnants of Ida left her wrath on Hackettstown, with over four inches of rain and flooding in the aftermath.

Some areas in Warren County remained without power on Thursday night, the JCP&L tally countywide at about 1,500 JCP&L customers. Warren County Commissioner James Kern III posted information for residents who were in need of ice and water, with both available at some stores at no cost through JCP&L's program for their customers, including the Mansfield ShopRite on Route 57 in Hackettstown.

As skies started to clear on Thursday morning, the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection's Water Monitoring and Standards measured 4.71 inches of rain over 48 hours at 8 a.m., at the South Branch Raritan River near Hackettstown, 4.35 inches there within 24 hours. The Musconetcong River location registered slightly less at 4.36 inches, 4.01 of those within a 24-hour period. The Pequest River by Great Meadows registered 3.91 inches of rainfall in 48 hours, 3.61 within 24 hours.

The Hackettstown Police Department updated its social media overnight with a message indicating that Hackettstown was part of the Flood Warning area. On Wednesday night at one point, Hackettstown however had been under both a Flood Warning - meaning flooding was imminent - as well as a Flood Watch through Tuesday morning. Additionally, Hackettstown was part of the Tornado Watch area as Ida passed through New Jersey.

At about 4 a.m., the police department and others in the region reported on “widespread flooding continuing across the warning area,” with rivers and streams triggering road closures.


As of Thursday morning, there were less than 100 residents in Hackettstown without power, according to JCP&L. There was no restoration time available for those without power as of Thursday morning.
