Man With Heroin Crashes Car Into Guardrail: Police
A 55-year-old man from Flanders hit a guardrail on Monday evening.

Mount Olive Police found heroin in the car of a man who hit a guardrail on Monday evening, according to the police report. The 55-year-old man from Flanders, identified as Gerard Caponi, had been trapped in his a silver Mitsubishi after crashing into the rail. The car was spotted by an officer on his routine patrol at about 9 PM.
Firefighters from Flanders Fire Company #1 and Rescue Squad came to extricate Caponi, but had to take him out of the small sports car out of the vehicle using saws, hand tools, and hydraulic rescue tools, according to the Flanders Fire Co. #1 Facebook page. According to the report, the car had run under a guard rail on Route 206, near the south entrance to Overlook (Oakwood) Apartments. The driver was removed and treated for a minor injury on his forearm, according to police reports, and then transported by emergency personnel to Saint Clare's Hospital.
As that initial officer was securing Caponi's vehicle, he found evidence of suspected heroin, including a metal pipe with drug residue. According to police, it was determined that the Heroin and Paraphernalia belonged to Mr. Caponi. Caponi was charged with Possession of CDS Heroin, Possession of Paraphernalia, Under the Influence of CDS, DWI, Possession of CDS in a Motor Vehicle, and Failure to Maintain Lane. Caponi was released to a sober driver pending a court hearing.
