An Art Show Where Parents are the Judges

Schools showcase students' artistic, culinary and musical creations.

The biggest draw at the annual Superintendent's Gallery, held in the municipal complex during Friday evening's downpour, wasn't the exemplary student-crafted works of art or sculpture.

It wasn't the students' photography or videos, either—it was the students' desserts.

Granted, the event is planned as a showcase for the best arts and crafts created during the school year, and hundreds of parents came to "ooh" and "ahh" over the displays, as well as "coo" over their own children's work, but the Gallery is much more.

Artwork lined every hall in the school district's labyrinth offices, as well as the corridor to the big multi-purpose room, and student musicians soloing cello or harp provided the right tone to the displays. The main room, with music provided by the Auten Road Advanced Orchestra, featured photography and an exhibit of sewn projects, in addition to high school painting projects.

And dinner.

Families lined up to try the food made by students in the school's foods classes, with salads, meats, vegetables and most popularly, desserts, presented. The pies, choclate-covered pretzel sticks and rice Krispees treats were the night's hit, judging by the expressions on the faces in the food line.

Every aspect of the presentation lived up to the gallery's claim to be "Celebrating Excellence in the Arts!"
