Flood Watch Issued For Somerset County As Rain Continues

There is a chance for flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall in Somerset County through early Friday morning.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A flash flood watch has been issued for Somerset County as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Friday morning.

The watch, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect through 2 a.m. on Friday.

Multiple rounds of rain showers with thunderstorms are expected to move through the Somerset County area through this Thursday night dropping around 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rainfall, according to NWS.

Flash flooding is possible with excessive runoff likely to cause flooding of creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

The NWS warned of flooding in poor drainage, urban areas, and low-water crossings.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast:

Thursday Afternoon: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 53. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then scattered showers between midnight and 2 a.m. Low around 45. East wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday: A slight chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 62. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Friday Night: A chance of showers, mainly after 8 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
