Hillsborough 6th Grade Teacher Named NJ's 2025 Exemplary Educator

The New Jersey Department of Education recognized Mary Beth Hughes, a 6th-grade science teacher at Auten Road Intermediate School.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Education has recognized Mary Beth Hughes, 6th-grade science teacher at Auten Road Intermediate School as a 2025 Exemplary Educator.

Hughes was selected through the competitive 2025 Exemplary Educator Recognition Program, to honor outstanding educators in New Jersey schools. This award recognizes secondary (grades 6-12) professionals who:

  • Demonstrate an exceptional positive impact on students, colleagues, and the school community
  • Possess a clear vision for quality teaching and learning
  • Exhibits exceptional teaching and leadership abilities

"This honor is a testament to Hughes’ dedication and commitment in the classroom as a science teacher, where her passion for inquiry and hands-on learning inspires students to reach their full potential,"said Volpe.

"Her commitment to our students and the teaching profession truly embodies the excellence we strive for every day at ARIS and in Hillsborough. We are incredibly proud to have her represent our school as a 2025 NJ Exemplary Educator," said Volpe.

Hughes started teaching in Hillsborough in 1997. She has taught 6th grade in social studies, literacy, and math, specializing in science since 2002.

At ARIS, her extensive involvement includes advising the Newspaper, STEM, Yearbook, and Year-In-Pictures Clubs. Furthermore, she has served on key committees, including the School Safety & Climate Team, I&RS, Crisis Management Team, and School Improvement Panel, and has also been a dedicated mentor to new teachers.

Hughes holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Government & Law from Lafayette College. She also earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from The College of New Jersey.

In addition to her degrees, Hughes has pursued advanced coursework at various institutions, including Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, Rider University, and Gratz College.
