Hillsborough Comic Stars In New Amazon TV Series 'Under Cover Comic'

Adam Mamawala has been performing stand-up nationwide with recent shows in California, Colorado, and at two military bases in Hawaii.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough native and stand-up comedian Adam Mamawala is starring as the lead actor in his first-ever TV series called "Under Cover Comic."

Mamawala has always had a good sense of humor growing up but was never the class clown.

"That's a common misconception. It's usually the kid who has a good sense of humor. The quiet kid making sarcastic comments about the class clown under his breath," said Mamawala to Patch.

After graduating from Hillsborough High School in 2005, Mamawala went off to the College of New Jersey. He graduated in 2009 and that's when he began doing stand-up comedy

"The economy was in shambles and it turned out to be a blessing. I figured I was probably going to be broke anyway so I might as well be broke and do what I want to do," said Mamawala.

Mamawala studied Communications in college with a focus on Public Relations which helped him to market himself. Before long he was performing stand-up at local colleges and then began touring colleges in less than a year after graduating.

His personal comedic style is very autobiographical.

"Me talking about my life. And observational comedy and how situations pertain to me," said Mamawala.

This led to him connecting with writer/director Bobby Friedman to work on "Under Cover Comic" on March 2, 2020.

"When the pandemic happened, I assumed that like everything else, the first series I had ever been trusted to star in would be scrapped and that opportunity would be gone," said Mamawala.

However, Mamawala said it gave them time to refine the script and when shooting began in May 2021 they could hit the ground running.

They had 12 days to shoot six full episodes.

"It was definitely a real trial by fire. It was my first time being a lead actor in something," said Mamawala.

The series follows Adam, a Brooklyn father of two, who is working at a dead-end office job and is not fulfilled.

"He has a cancer scare and near-death experience which rejiggered his brain. 'If I died would I be happy with how I lived my life?' So he pursues comedy but he is married and has kids. Can you have it all?" said Mamawala.

Mamawala said he could relate to the series because he was going through something similar at the time.

"I was married at the time, but I didn't have kids. I was definitely navigating that in my own life," said Mamawala.

Season one of the series is streaming now on Amazon Prime. To watch it, click here.

Along with the series, Mamawala has appeared on Comedy Central, MTV, BET, and SiriusXM, and both of his albums, Statistically More Relatable (2022) and One of the Good Ones (2017) debuted at #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts.

He has been a freelance contributor to Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update and Someecards and currently co-hosts podcasts Away Games and HORSE, as recently featured in the New York Times.
