Rescue Group 'Totally Overrun' By Small Animals In Somerset County Due To COVID
Hillsborough's Amwell Animal Rescue Group attributes the influx of small animals being discarded to COVID pandemic expenses.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough's Amwell Animal Rescue Group continues to struggle to keep up with the number of small animals being discarded.
"We are totally overrun. I have so many animals," said Hope Valenti of Bridgewater, who also runs Amwell Pet Supply at 434 Route 206 in Hillsborough.
Valenti, an animal lover, also helps CAPIC Cat Rescue and Amwell Animal Rescue Group (AARG), a 501C3 charitable organization.

"It's COVID overload. I just had a pregnant rabbit give birth to four babies," said Valenti. "She was pregnant before I got her. And I am getting constant calls from people not wanting their pets."
In July 2021, Patch spoke with Valenti who said the problem had been getting worse throughout the pandemic. Read More: Overrun By Guinea Pigs, Rabbits: Hillsborough Shelter Needs Help

Valenti attributed the issue to the amount of work and money needed to care for the small animals. The pandemic has put a strain on residents' finances causing more people to give up their animals.
Some of that work includes replacing bedding and cleaning cages multiple times a week. This can add up to expenses some people may not have amid the pandemic, said Valenti.
Currently, Valenti's nonprofit is in need of monetary donations "to be used used for the paper bedding for cages we use, as this is a huge cost for us."
Monetary donations can be sent through paypal.me/aargnj.
Additionally, the shelter can use:
- Small animal toys and treats
- Paper towels
- Garbage bags
- Fresh veggies - romaine, parsley, cilantro, any green or red leafy lettuce (no iceberg)
- Baby wipes
- Lightweight fleece blankets
"These items would be greatly appreciated," said Valenti.
Donations can be left at Amwell Pet Supply at any time from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"We have many rescue animals at this time and appreciate any help. We thank the community for their kindness," said Valenti.
