Hillsborough Veteran Awarded 'Veteran of the Year' Posthumously

David Lee Coleman, a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, was the founder and first Post Commander of the Hillsborough VFW Post 8371​.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The Hillsborough Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8371, which includes the Montgomery, Branchburg, and Hillsborough townships, have awarded David Lee Coleman as "Veteran of the Year" posthumously.

David Lee Coleman, a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve (USNR), was the founder and first Post Commander of the Hillsborough Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8731.

He served in this role from July 1, 1976, to June 30, 1977, and again from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010. In addition to his terms as Commander and 48 years of dedication and service to VFW Post 8731, Dave held every elected or appointed position within the organization, most recently as Judge Advocate.

David Lee Coleman's military career is marked by significant service and dedication. He began
his journey in the U.S. Navy on August 1, 1953, with preflight training in Pensacola, Florida. His
training extended through Alabama, Florida, and Texas, focusing on flight and gunnery skills.
Coleman received his first assignment as an ensign on the USS Valley Forge, stationed in
Norfolk, VA. His expertise in anti-submarine warfare later led him to serve on the USS Essex in
Quonset Point, Rhode Island, from 1956 to 1957.

In 1957, Coleman transitioned to the Navy Reserve, yet his commitment to service brought him
back to active duty during critical national events. He was recalled during the Berlin Crisis in
September 1961 and served as a pilot during the Cuban Missile Crisis—a period of high tension
in U.S. history. His active military service concluded with his discharge in September 1962.

Lt. Commander Coleman’s dedication during pivotal moments in history reflects his steadfast
commitment to his country, which continues to parallel his nearly five decades of service with
VFW Post 8731.

Lieutenant Commander Coleman’s plaque, which recognizes his service and commitment to our
country and VFW Post 8371, will be displayed on the Veterans Wall of the Hillsborough
Municipal Building.
