HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — It's already started to snow in Hillsborough, but forecasters expect much more to come Friday night into Saturday.

Hillsborough could be in for a lot of snow, but predictions vary.

The National Weather Service placed Somerset County under a winter storm warning from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday. The agency expects accumulating snow to begin Friday evening, becoming heavy at times through Saturday morning and diminishing that afternoon.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the warning says.

Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations between 3 to 7 inches. Wind gusts as high as 35 to 40 mph are also anticipated.

But Hillsborough may get less snow than much of New Jersey. The National Weather Service predicts 12-18 inches of snow along the Jersey Shore.

Hillsborough residents are reminded that parking on snow-covered roads is prohibited.

Township Code Chapter 143-21 prohibits parking on snow-covered roads. When snow is anticipated, use off-street parking as an alternative. Vehicles are subject to summonses and the potential of being towed at the owner’s expense.

Whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway an emergency shall exist, and no vehicle shall be parked on either side of any of the streets or parts thereof as described in Schedule XVI (§ 143-45) of the Township Code.

Parking prohibitions shall remain in effect after the snow has ceased or until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic.

Additionally, N.J.S.A. 39:4-77.1 requires all snow and ice to be cleared from a vehicle before operating said vehicle on the roadway. The purpose is to avoid flying ice and snow, which can damage other vehicles and potentially create visibility problems for other drivers.

When clearing snow, residents are asked not to shovel snow in the roadway from sidewalks and driveways, as per Township Code Chapter 197-2.

If you lose power, contact your local power provider and not Police Communications unless an emergency exists (ie. power line causing a fire or blocking a roadway):
