"When I was a kid, I only wanted to be two things, either it was a cartoonist or a comedian. So obviously, I had no intention of making any money right off the bat," Poveromo told Patch. "You know, the arts are always hard to do, but it was always something in the back of my mind that I really wanted to do... and I'm very fortunate enough to be able to do it."

Poveromo was introduced to Flounder Brewing by his friend and singer Glen Phillips of the band Toad and the Wet Sprocket, who was performing there.

"He invited me up to go hang out. And it was just a beautiful place. And I got to know the booker, and one thing led to another, and they said they booked comedy there. So I was like, let's do it," said Poveromo.

Poveromo is known for bringing a blend of self-deprecation and optimism to his stand-up comedy.

"There's a lot of things going on right now, just in the country, a lot of things to talk about. People are frustrated. Thankfully, the new administration, and it's not all politics or anything like that, but I just think there's a... general sense of dystopia," said Poveromo of what the audience can expect. "I think it'll be funny, a relief, you know, a break from everything that's kind of going on in the world."

While some comedians sit down and write their material, Poveromo prefers to "kind of just absorb the world around me."

"I think it's just how you train your brain to pick up on how it naturally sees the world. So if you're already kind of seeing how the world works in a kind of a skewed way, it's just a matter of being like, oh my god, this is bizarre. This is kind of fun. This is bizarre. This is funny. And saying it out loud to your friends, having absolutely no filter," said Poveromo. "Does it make them laugh? Does it make a stranger laugh? And I then take this, write it down, and remember it later, to do it on stage and see how it works out."

Poveromo will be performing on July 16 at Flounder Brewing, 2 Clerico Lane in Hillsborough. The show will also feature Joanne Filan and be hosted by Sonya Vai. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, visit flounderbrewing.com

"Comedy is about bringing people together for the most part, so for at least an hour... everybody's just trying to laugh and have a good time," said Poveromo.
