Overrun By Guinea Pigs, Rabbits: Hillsborough Rescue Needs Help

"The chain stores keep selling animals to anybody... and then these poor animals are just discarded when they can't care for them."

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough's Amwell Animal Rescue Group is being overrun by guinea pigs and rabbits as more and more people are discarding them.

"The chain stores keep selling animals to anybody and never take the minute to explain what it takes to care for these animals," said Bridgewater resident Hope Valenti.

Valenti is a huge animal lover who runs Amwell Pet Supply at 434 Route 206 in Hillsborough where she also helps CAPIC Cat Rescue and Amwell Animal Rescue Group (AARG).

"All these people go in and just adopt these animals not knowing anything then a week later or 3 months later they are just discarded. These poor animals, it is just the worst," said Valenti.

Caring for small animals requires work and money. Valenti noted the bedding should be replaced and the cages cleaned multiple times a week. This can add up to expenses some people may not have amid the pandemic.

There has been such an influx in animal surrenders of rabbits and guinea pigs in particular that Valenti says she has had to turn people away.

"I have a waiting list because I can't just keep taking them in," said Valenti.

Most animals shelters can't accept smaller animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits because the larger animals such as dogs can frighten them, said Valenti.

"The poor animals are deathly afraid so the shelters call me," said Valenti.

Additionally, Valenti noted the chain stores will not take the animals back. Rather than having the animals euthanized Valenti is doing her best to try and save as many as she can.

However, due to the influx in small animals, Valenti is in need of much need supplies, money and volunteers to help care for them.

"We always need paper towels, baby wipes, white kitchen-size trash bags, romaine lettuce, carrots and Carefresh small animal bedding," said Valenti. "Monetary donations are always greatly appreciated as well."

All items can be dropped off at Amwell Pet Supply in Hillsborough anytime during business hours and are greatly appreciated.

The bottom line Valenti wants to get across is for customers to educate themselves before buying any animal.

"Pets are a lifetime commitment," said Valenti. "Animals shouldn't be an impulse buy, they are not expendable."

Those interested in volunteering or donating can call 908-359-5117, email aargnj@gmail.com, or visit amwellanimalrescue.com. Monetary donations are also accepted and can be made to AARG's Paypal at paypal.me/aargnj.
