SCVTHS Students Help Organize A Veterans' Day Luncheon Ceremony At VFW
Attendees included members from Gold Star families, veterans, and active army members.

Kushi Rao, Saanvi Trivedi, and Shreya Patro decided to plan a “Veterans' Day” luncheon for the patriotism section of their competition. This event was hosted at the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW Post in Manville, New Jersey on November 18th, which was authorized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. Additionally, Mr. Graf, a U.S. History teacher, Army veteran, and VFW’s 2023-2024 New Jersey Teacher of the Year, worked alongside the team to ensure that the event ran smoothly. This luncheon was planned in order to honor both fallen soldiers and those who have served in the military. Also, the team honored the Gold Star families and their heroic loved ones who had sacrificed their lives for America at this event. The group believed that this luncheon would be a fantastic way to display their patriotism, as it was dedicated to those with the utmost patriotism: American soldiers.
Planning this event took weeks of dedication and determination; the team worked around the clock to make sure that the luncheon was executed properly. To begin, the group reached out to many Gold Star families, who all, unfortunately, had lost a family member in action. They paid their respects and courteously invited the families to this luncheon, informing them that their loved one would be properly honored for his sacrifice. Additionally, the team invited veterans from both the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization and the American Legion, thanking them for their service and formally inviting them to the luncheon. Also, the team meticulously planned out the details of this event, such as transportation, refreshments, and ceremonial decorations.
At the event, SkillsUSA members spent time with the veterans and Gold Star families, learning about their experiences and asking respectful questions. Overall, the Veteran’s Day luncheon was a great success; it paid respects to the brave individuals who fought for our country and risked their lives. The team was honored to organize this event, as it allowed them to plan and manage a project that truly revered the sacrifices of American veterans.
