Hillsborough Library Teen Tech Week to Feature Hands-On Workshops

The Hillsborough Public Library is participating in the Makerspace movement, offering hands-on opportunities to build, create, and craft.

A library is not a place for silent reading and silent reading only. The 21st century library is a makerspace - a place where like-minded people can gather to create, build, and craft. The Hillsborough Library will be participating in this movement, offering hands-on workshops for the community.

The Hillsborough Library will host a “Teen Craftacular” this March for children in grades 5 through 8. During Teen Tech Week, participants will learn how to transform old tech items into something new and creative.

The workshop will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on March 12. Related activities will be held throughout Teen Tech Week on March 8 through 14.

“The community comes together, engages with each other, learns from each other, and works together every single day at our library branches,” Laura Mellor, head of youth services at the Hillsborough Library.

“Our libraries are makerspaces,” Mellor added. “Whether it’s working with polymers or building with Legos, knitting a hat or editing family photos, learning about robotics or creating your own garden, you can do it at our libraries.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that occupations related to STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - are projected to see an increase of about 1 million jobs by 2022.

“Our makerspace programs support these growing industries,” Mellor stated. For more information on programs at the Hillsborough Library, click here.
