Threat Of Severe Storms Closes Hillsborough Schools Early

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A threat of a severe thunderstorm, which could bring large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain, has caused Hillsborough schools to close early Monday.

All afternoon kindergarten and preschool classes have been canceled. All district activities are canceled and lunches will not be served.

Catholic Charities aftercare programs will be closed and transportation to afternoon Vo-Tech students is canceled.

"Please stay safe," according to the district.

Immaculate Conception School in Somerville also announced cancellations for all after-school activities, including CARES for Monday.

Montgomery Township School District is also having an early dismissal.

The afternoon weather is expected to be humid with severe afternoon thunderstorms bringing hail and damaging winds, according to Accuweather. Read More: Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, 60 MPH Winds In NJ Forecast

A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for Somerset County on Monday until 8 p.m.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast, according to National Weather Service:

Monday Afternoon: Showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. High near 78. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 55. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
