Future Of Hudson Maxim School To Be Discussed At Meeting

The school's future is the only item up for discussion at a Nov. 28 community outreach meeting.

HOPATCONG, NJ — The future of Hudson Maxim School is the only item up for discussion at an upcoming community outreach meeting.

Superintendent Arthur DiBenedetto will lead the meeting on Nov. 28. It starts at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

Consolidation of some district schools has been on the table following a major loss in state aid earlier this year and declining enrollment. Hudson Maxim is home to preschool through first grade and is the oldest school in the district.

"We have never seen this before with a superintendent calling a meeting on his own with the community," Board of Education president Anthony Fasano told NJ Herald, calling the format"less intimidating and more open."

Hudson Maxim was one of two schools with mold found this September (Tulsa Trail is the other). That mold pushed the start of school back eight days; the state approved about $600,000 in emergency aid to alleviate costs from remediation efforts.

Two more single item meetings will be held. The eighth grade class and their future will be discussed on Dec. 5, and recommendations about the reconfiguration about borough schools will be discussed on Dec. 12. Those meetings will also be held at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
