Gas Smell Reported At Hudson Maxim School

The smell was detected outside the building, officials said.

HOPATCONG, NJ — A gas smell was reported at Hudson Maxin School Monday morning, but there is no cause for concern, principal Katherine McFadden said.

The smell was coming from outside the building, McFadden said. The Hopatcong Police Department, Fire Marshall, Fire Department, and Elizabethtown Gas investigated the smell, and found no cause for concern. Students in the school are going about their days as normal, McFadden said.

Hudson Maxim has been in the news several times so far this school year. It was one of two schools with mold found this September, although this smell does not appear to be related (Tulsa Trail is the other). That mold pushed the start of school back eight days; the state approved about $600,000 in emergency aid to alleviate costs from remediation efforts.

District officials are considering eliminating the school in an effort to address budget cuts and declining enrollment. Hudson Maxim is home to preschool through first grade and is the oldest school in the district.
