Hopatcong Police: Lock Your Car Doors

Authorities say burglaries are happening because doors are being left unlocked.

HOPATCONG, NJ - Once again the surrounding area is being hit by a rash of vehicle burglaries and theft and Hopatcong Police are reminding residents of one common thread.

Vehicles are being left unlocked.

"You are the first line of defense in the protection of your family and property. Lock your doors and don't leave your keys in the vehicle," police wrote in a statement. "It is sad that we have to worry about our vehicles parked in our driveways, but in this era, there is a criminal element that looks to take advantage of our comfort."

Police also noted burglaries have been extended to homes.

"Again, doors are being left unlocked and perpetrators are sneaking into the homes looking for vehicle keys," police said. "There is not a specific vehicle these groups are looking for."

Things to do and look out for:

  • Lock your vehicles
  • Do not leave keys or fobs in vehicles
  • Do you have a camera pointed at your driveway?
  • Make sure your entry points are locked including garage doors
  • If you see something, say something. A vehicle driving slowly through a neighborhood with four occupants at 3 a.m. is not usual or common.
  • Don't assume someone else is going to call.
