HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — After an Ocean County woman was fatally shot in New Jersey earlier this month — allegedly by her boyfriend — a Hudson County domestic violence agency wanted the community to know that they're there to help.

Toraya Reid, 28, was found outside her Jackson apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds on Sept. 6. Reid is the oldest sister of Naz Reid of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, said media reports.

The man she was dating, Shaquille Green, 29, was charged with murder.

When To Call

An organization nearby in Bergen County has suggested that people don't have to wait until there's danger to call a domestic violence agency — whether to discuss a plan in the future for a friend, relative, or oneself.

"We know of all the barriers to leaving," said Julie Myner in an interview with Patch. "We want to communicate to the community, we'renot just a safe house. We can help you stay safe if you choose not to leave yet. We're really trying to remove the myth that we're just a shelter."

Shaquille Green has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon and is being held in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.

In America, two to three women per day are killed in domestic violence incidents, according to federal statistics.

A daily check of news reports on the incidents often turns up higher numbers, Patch found in 2021. READ MORE: How Common Are Cases Like Gabby Petito's?
