State And Local 9/11 Ceremonies To Be Held In Jersey City Thursday

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Jersey City will hold its annual Sept. 11 memorial ceremony on the waterfront on Thursday morning, and the state of New Jersey will hold a ceremony there in the evening.

On Sept. 11, 2001, approximately 750 New Jersey residents died in the terrorist attacks.

Federal officials say 2,796 people died that day, thousands more were injured, and many are still suffering health effects, including first responders.

Many of those who died were North Jersey residents who commuted to the World Trade Center each day.

In Jersey City, the city's ceremony is planned to start at 8:30 a.m. on Grand Street at the waterfront, near the city's 9/11 memorial. The New Jersey Symphony is scheduled to perform. Get more information and see a map of the location here.

State Ceremony

The state's 24th official Empty Sky candlelight vigil will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Liberty State Park, 1 Audrey Zapp Drive.

The state said, "Early arrival will offer visitors a chance to experience the sublime 'halo of light' that presents a sacred sense of unity and transcendence within the memorial’s walls."

The Pereira Triplets from West Orange will sing the National Anthem. There will be remarks from dignitaries and survivors. Father Michael Duffy will celebrate the life of Fr. Mychal Judge, and lead the candlelight vigil. Bands and choruses will also perform.
