Armed Man Hit Pedestrian With Mercedes After Argument In Hudson County: Prosecutor

An armed man hit a pedestrian with his car after arguing with him in downtown Jersey City, prosecutors say.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A 30-year-old Jersey City man was taken into custody by a SWAT Team last week after he fought with a pedestrian and then hit him with his Mercedes, said Hudson County prosecutors.

Hassan Degregoda of Jersey City was charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (motor vehicle), as well as weapons possession charges, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that a week ago Monday, just before 1:30 a.m., Jersey City police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck in the area of Bay and Erie streets.

They encountered a 37-year-old Jersey City resident with serious injuries. The vehicle that had hit the victim was gone.

Police investigated and found a Mercedes S530 in connection with the accident, prosecutors said. A high capacity magazine was discovered inside, prosecutors say.

Detectives determined that Degregoda and the victim had been in an argument before the collision, and that the suspect was armed with a handgun as they argued, according to witnesses.
