NJCU Weekend Sports Round-Up

Women's volleyball goes 2-1, men's tennis doubles team reaches the quarterfinals at regionals and men's and women's soccer come up short.

JERSEY CITY, NJ —Here is a round-up of New Jersey City University Gothic Knights athletics action from this past weekend.

Women's Volleyball

The Gothic Knights went 2-1 at last weekend's Skidmore Classic in Saratoga Springs, New York. NJCU (which enters this week with a 10-3 record) opened the tournament with a 3-o win (25-21, 25-15, 25-16) over Sage on Friday.

Freshman Rachel Pharo led the Gothic Knights with 15 kills, while freshman Dayshia Espinosa had a team-high 13 digs.

NJCU split a pair of games on Saturday. The Gothic Knights opened the day with a 3-0 loss (25-9, 25-19, 25-20) to host Skidmore. Pharo had nine kills and 11 digs in the match. Sophomore Sydney Lore had 11 assists.

The Knights then closed out the tournament with a 3-2 win (18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 15-10) over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Junior Paola Toledo led the Knights with 11 kills, while Lore was tops with 17 digs and 39 assists.

Up Next: The Gothic Knights return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they visit Rutgers-Camden in NJAC action.

Men's Tennis

The doubles team of senior Theo Bourghelle and sophomore Nico Teynie, who both are from France, won their first two matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Friday at Hobart College in Geneva, New York. The NJCU posted an 8-6 comeback win over a team from NYU, and then an 8-2 victory over a team from St. Lawrence University.

Bourghelle and Teynie ultimately lost to 8-7 to Skidmore's Brendan Jimenez and Zachary Portnoy in Saturday's quarterfinal.

NJCU sophomore Alejandro Ley won both his consolation matches on Saturday, defeating Vassar's James Balon 8-3 and Union's Ben Jacobs 8-5. Gothic Knights junior Ryan Weiss went 1-1 in Saturday's consolation round, defeating Union's Nick Weitzman 8-5 before losing 8-5 to St. Lawrence's Adam Heilbronner.

Up Next: The Gothic Knights will face Division I Wagner College at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Staten Island Tennis Center. It will be NJCU's final fall action of the 2021-22 season.

Women's Soccer

The Gothic Knights fell to 2-5-2 overall, 0-3-1 in the NJAC with a 3-0 loss to Rowan University on Saturday at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. NJCU sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Lotierzo finished the game with nine saves.

Gothic Knights sophomore forward Kim Brites and sophomore midfielder Krysti Alejandro each had a shot for the home team, though NJCU did not register a shot on goal.

Up Next: At 1 p.m. Saturday the Knights head to Ewing to face The College of New Jersey, the No. 1 ranked team in Division III.

Men's Soccer

New Jersey City fell to 7-3-1, 0-3 in the NJAC with Saturday's 2-0 conference loss to Rowan in Glassboro.

Golden Knights senior goalkeeper Nick Linebaugh made 10 saves in the contest.

Up Next: At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Gothic Knights will travel to Galloway to face Stockton University.
