📰 News we're reading

1. Teen Father Killed In Jersey City Was 'Best Person,' Says Fundraiser (patch.com) — Jersey City police are investigating the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Al‑Jahmir Curry of Pennsylvania, who was found wounded in a Rose Avenue apartment and later died at the hospital. A 17-year-old has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses, while a fundraiser highlights Curry as a joyful teen father whose family is seeking help with burial costs.

2. Rep. Menendez Helps Secure $1.25 Million Grant for Jersey City Public Schools (tapinto.net) — Jersey City Public Schools has secured more than $1.2 million in federal funding to expand school-based mental health services through its new Project STARR initiative. The grant will train and place additional school psychologists in Jersey City schools, aiming to boost early intervention and intensive support for students’ emotional and academic well-being.

3. Mayor-Elect Solomon Responds to Scaled-Back New Jersey Turnpike Expansion Plan (insidernj.com) — Jersey City’s mayor-elect James Solomon says the Turnpike Authority’s decision not to widen the highway through the city is a major win for local neighborhoods and residents’ health. He still criticizes the billions earmarked for car traffic instead of mass transit and safer streets, and vows to keep pushing for people-first transportation priorities as he prepares to take office in January.

4. Murphy scraps controversial Turnpike widening through Hudson County (nj.com subscription) — A major change to the Turnpike plan means no new lanes will be added between Bayonne and Jersey City, though the aging Newark Bay Bridge will still be fully replaced. State officials will instead fund new ramps giving trucks direct port access and other Hudson County upgrades, while Jersey City advocates remain worried about future congestion and cut-through traffic into local streets.

5. 26 Hoboken + Jersey City Women to Watch in 2026 (hobokengirl.com) — A new “women to watch” list spotlights Jersey City and Hoboken residents leading everything from climate activism and arts to small business and youth programs. Several honorees are based in Jersey City, running creative spaces, advocacy groups, and nonprofits that directly shape local culture, sustainability, and support services for neighbors across Hudson County.
