📰 News we're reading

1. Jersey City just blocked shuttered hospital property from becoming luxury condos (nj.com subscription) — Jersey City’s council has moved to keep the closing Heights University Hospital site from becoming luxury or senior housing, aiming to preserve acute medical services there. Officials, residents, and unions are pressing owner Hudson Regional Health to negotiate a plan that maintains real hospital care in the Heights as the facility winds down most operations.

2. Dec. 12, 2025 (jerseybee.org) — Jersey City residents caring for loved ones with dementia can now access free, Medicare-funded respite care and support through the GUIDE program at a participating local facility. A statewide news roundup also covers NJ Transit holiday ticket deals, renewed hospital mask rules, and regional vaccine guidance, offering several health and transit updates that could affect local families.

3. Priest gifts massive Nativity scene to NYC Italian American Museum (nypost.com) — A Manhattan priest who grew up in Jersey City has donated his massive, lifelong Nativity scene collection to the Italian American Museum in Lower Manhattan, where it’s now on public display. His passion for the Italian “Persipica” tradition began as a boy beneath a Christmas tree in Jersey City, and the collection has since grown to more than 100 pieces gathered from around the world.

4. Why isn't North Bergen in Bergen County? There's a deep history to it (northjersey.com) — Jersey City makes a cameo in a deep dive into how North Bergen ended up with a name that doesn’t match its county or geography. The story traces the area’s evolution from the original 1661 Bergen Township through breakups that created Jersey City, Hoboken, and other Hudson County towns, explaining how today’s borders emerged.

5. Prosecutor: NJ Transit bus strikes and kills pedestrian, 66, in North Bergen (hudsoncountyview.com) — A 66-year-old Hackensack man died after being struck by an NJ Transit bus running the 84 line from Jersey City to North Bergen, with the collision occurring early Tuesday in North Bergen. Hudson County investigators are now handling the case, and the bus remained at the scene as authorities continue to review what happened.
