2 Lacey Baseball Teams Take Home Tournament Championships

The Lacey Lightning 9U and 11 U II travel baseball teams both won championships in their respective age divisions in a Memorial Day Baseball tournament held in Marlboro.

The Marlboro Madness tournament featured teams from New Jersey and New York, 11U Team Manager Jack Sramaty said.

9U Lacey Lightning

The team started the tournament with a 5-3 loss against the Marlboro Mustangs Gold followed by three straight wins, which secured a spot in the Championship game.

The Lacey Lightning faced the Marlboro Mustangs Blue and won 14 to 4. Jacob Bowles propelled the team to a victory with a grand slam homerun.

The team’s Manager Jeff Jurkiewicz said that he is very proud of his team for not getting down after their opening game loss. The team came together with four straight wins after suffering that opening game loss, he said.

11U II Lacey Lightning

The 11U II team went undefeated for the tournament with four wins and one tie.

After two 11-1 wins, the team tied a Sacred Heart from Mount Holly team 3 to 3, which gave them a second seed in the tournament play-offs. In a rematch against Sacred Heart, the Lacey Lightning came away with a 6-2 victory, which earned them a spot in the Championship game.

“Great defense, pitching and big bats” propelled the team to a 10-0 victory against the Colts Neck Cougars, who were originally undefeated, Sramaty said.

“Everyone up and down the line-up contributed in every game of the tournament both at the plate and in the field,” he said. “I couldn’t be any prouder of my team.”
