Recreation Grant Will Make Programs 'Seamless' for Individuals With Disabilities

The Lacey Township Recreation Department has received $10,000 from the state for recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, Director James Wioland said.

The grant, which was provided by the Department of Community Affairs, will help make Lacey programs “seamless,” Wioland said.

“It allows us to use the money to make accommodations or to help offset the cost where we’re providing programs for people with disabilities,” he said.

This is the first year Wioland has applied for and received the grant for Lacey Township, although he has had previous experience from his previous recreation position in Cherry Hill.

“We’re an inclusive department. We don’t turn anyone away,” he said, adding that the grant will provide additional resources to better accommodate those with disabilities.

The funds will be used towards the township’s Learn to Swim program, which encompasses swim lessons, as well as for lifeguards for the Extended School Year Program.

“It’ll offset the cost of instructors,” he said. “There are times you have to make accommodations for a child. That’s what the money is earmarked for—to provide more support.”

Future grant money could be used towards programs specifically geared towards those with disabilities, he said.

“We’re hopeful for 2013 as well,” he said. On Thursday, June 14, the township Committee authorized the execution of the 2013 Recreational Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities Grant.

Wioland said the Recreation Department might announce in 2013 new and “stronger” recreational programming for all individuals with disabilities.
