When users click on the link provided in the alert, the scammers strike hard, the Sheriff said.
MERCER COUNTY, NJ – Scammer have found a new way to target residents and steal money, Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler said.
They are using text messages to claim the person has unpaid E-ZPass tolls, and when users click on the link provided in the alert, the scammers strike hard.
“Many of us on the job and at home have seen them. The text looks official at first glance, advising the person they have a relatively small unpaid balance but warning of large and excessive fines if not paid quickly,” Kemler said.

“Know that E-Z Pass officially contacts customers by mail, not by text. So, if you get a shady E-ZPass text message demanding instant payment, DO NOT click any links or provide personal or banking information. Delete the text immediately to cut off contact.”
NJ E-ZPass is strongly encouraging customers who have already clicked the link and filled out the form to immediately contact their bank or credit card provider.
