Lawrence Firefighters Help Battle 4-Alarm Ewing Blaze

The stubborn, smoky blaze broke out Thursday at Christina Seix Academy, a private school in the process of being built in the 1500 block of Stuyvesant Avenue in Ewing Township.

Firefighters from all three Lawrence Township volunteer fire companies this evening (Thursday, Jan. 19) helped battle a stubborn, smoky blaze at a private school building in the process of being built in the 1500 block of Stuyvesant Avenue in Ewing Township.

The blaze on the campus of the Christina Seix Academy – a private school for “underserved children” in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 that is expected to open in the Fall of 2012 – was reported about 4:30 p.m. and burned for nearly four hours before it was declared under control.

Firefighters at the scene said the fire was difficult to access because it was burning between multiple layers of roofing material, including both metal decking and plywood. Multiple crews of firefighters using a variety of saws worked from the roof to cut several holes in an effort to reach the fire.
