Lawrenceville Students Hold MLK Day of Service

On Jan. 18, each of the Lawrenceville School's 809 students will honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. through volunteer work on community service projects at organizations throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This is the 10th year the school has held its Martin Luther King Community Service Day. Projects will take place between 8:30 a.m. – noon.
 
While projects will range from building a fence for the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church to sorting donations at the Mercer Street Food Bank, the majority of volunteer efforts will be made in local daycare centers, pre- and elementary schools.

Rachel Cantlay, Lawrenceville's director of Community Service, estimates that nearly 3,000 local children will be served by Lawrenceville students.
 
The Lawrenceville School's Martin Luther King Community Service Day is part of the school's commitment to teaching students that a key to becoming an educated citizen means knowing how to contribute to society in order to make the world a better place to live. Therefore, students fulfill a 40-hour community service requirement for graduation.

Some students meet the requirement with work done during school vacations or prior to coming to Lawrenceville. Others perform their service during the school year by working with nonprofit agencies and organizations in the Lawrence-Trenton-Princeton area.

Last year, Lawrenceville students provided more than 13,000 hours of service at non-profit agencies and organizations, mostly in Mercer County.
