TRENTON, NJ - A Mercer County man has been charged in the shooting death of another county resident this month, authorities said.

Rasheed Funderburg, 34, of Trenton, was charged Wednesday with murder and firearms offenses and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said Thursday.

The prosecutor’s office has since filed a motion to keep Funderburg detained until trial.

The charges stem from an investigation conducted by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department.

At around 8:21 p.m. on April 14, Trenton police responded to a ShotSpotter activation of six rounds near 328 Rutherford Avenue, the prosecutor’s office said.

Police located a man in the area - later identified as Daniel Garvin, 46, of Trenton - behind 332 and 330 Rutherford Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, the prosecutor’s office said.

Garvin was transported to an area hospital but was later pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident revealed that Fudnerburg had engaged in a physical altercation with a younger man at a Prospect Street liquor store before the shooting, the prosecutor’s office said.

The younger man then fled around the corner to Rutherford Avenue with several individuals, including Funderburg, following him. Funderburg then retrieved a handgun and aprached the alleyway where the younger man had been seen running and fired several shots. Garvin was struck three times by gunfire as a result, the prosecutor’s office said.

Anyone with further information about the shooting is asked to contact the Mercer County Homicide Task Force at (609) 989-6406.
